Every commercial dairy farmer in India knows the dread of the approaching summer. As temperatures soar past 40°C in May and June, farm economics take a massive hit. Milk production drops by anywhere from 15% to 25%, while the fat and SNF (Solid Not Fat) percentages plummet. Milk earnings face a double whammy!
In the industry, this is known as the “Summer Slump.”
Some farmers try to combat this externally. They invest heavily in massive industrial fans, foggers, and automated sprinkler systems to cool the cattle. While external cooling is absolutely necessary, it only addresses half the problem. The vast majority doesn’t even try. They seem to have forfeited their faith to destiny.
Having said that, the real danger of heat stress doesn’t just come from the sun; it comes from inside the cow’s stomach. At Shunya Agritech, we focus on solving the Summer Slump from the inside out.

To understand heat stress, you have to look at what happens in the rumen (the cow’s primary stomach compartment).
During the summer months, traditional soil-grown green fodder dries up. To compensate, farmers inevitably increase the ratio of dry crop residues—like wheat or paddy straw (bhusa)—and heavy grain concentrates in the feed trough.
This creates a biological trap. Digestion is a heat-generating process. Breaking down harsh, dry, high-lignin roughage requires massive microbial fermentation. This fermentation acts like an internal furnace. When a cow eats a heavy diet of dry bhusa in the middle of May, she is literally generating excess body heat from the inside, exactly when she is struggling to cool down on the outside.
Furthermore, a stressed, panting cow naturally drinks less water and eats less feed, leading to a rapid loss of body condition and an immediate drop in milk yield.
You cannot simply force a heat-stressed cow to drink more water from a trough. You have to trick her into eating her water.
This is where Shunya’s Nutri Ankurit Fodder (NAF) fundamentally changes the summer feeding protocol. NAF is our premium hydroponic green fodder, cultivated from high-quality maize grain. Because it is grown in our climate-controlled environments, it is lush, green, and enzymatically active 365 days a year, even at the peak of a drought.
The secret weapon against the Summer Slump is the moisture content of NAF.
When you pull a mat of maize-based NAF from a Shunya GLC, it is composed of roughly 80% to 85% water. But this is not the same as the free-standing water in a drinking trough. This is cellular water.
A cow will prioritize her own survival over milk production. When she is dehydrated and internally overheated, she diverts all her energy to regulating her core temperature, shutting down the milk synthesis process.
By feeding maize-based NAF, you keep the rumen cool, maintain optimal hydration levels, and provide a steady stream of pre-digested amino acids. The cow doesn’t have to fight to digest her food, and she doesn’t have to fight the heat alone.
The result? The cow maintains her feed intake, her stress levels drop, and she continues to produce consistent, high-quality milk straight through the harshest months of the year.
We cannot control the escalating heat of the Indian summer. In fact as global warming intensifies, we will see more and hotter days.
And we cannot magically create grazing pastures during a drought.
But we can control the feed.
Relying entirely on fans and sprinklers is a defensive strategy, that too available to only a few. Integrating Shunya’s NAF into the daily ration is an optimal strategy. It is time to stop fighting the Summer Slump from the outside and start climate-proofing your herd from the inside.
