National Milk Day, celebrated every year on 26 November, honours Dr. Verghese Kurien, the Father of the White Revolution. His work established India as the world’s largest milk producer, powered by cooperatives, farmer-centric systems, and science-backed dairy management.
But today, India’s dairy sector faces a new generation of challenges: fodder scarcity, climate stress, volatile input costs, and stagnating productivity among smallholder farmers. If Kurien built the supply chain of milk, the next revolution must build the supply chain of nutrition.

Dry fodder (bhusa) and concentrates often become the default diet. But without balanced green nutrition, heat stress increases, milk fat drops, SNF fluctuates, and milk quantity becomes unpredictable.

- Control group lost up to 25% income due to volume drop
The study reaffirms a simple truth:
Good fodder = strong rumen function; strong rumen = better milk.

Dr. Kurien introduced the importance of:

- transparent pricing

- science-enabled dairy practices
But the next decade demands equal focus on nutrition, climate resilience, and hyper-local supply chains.
