Job Summary:
Shunya is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Seed Procurement Manager to oversee the sourcing, purchasing, and quality control of maize and barley seedsfor our hydroponic fodder production. This role is critical to optimizing costs, ensuring consistent seed quality, and securing a reliable supply chain to support Shunya’s Growth and Logistic Centres (GLCs).
The ideal candidate will have deep experience in agricultural procurement, supplier relationship management, and cost optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Procurement Strategy & Execution
∙Develop and implement a cost-effective procurement strategy for seeds (wheat, maize, barley).
∙Identify and evaluate potential seed suppliers, including local and national sources.
∙Conduct market research to track price trends, availability, and emerging suppliers.
∙Negotiate pricing, contracts, and payment terms with suppliers to optimize costs.
∙Ensure timely procurement and delivery of seeds to all locations.
2. Supplier Relationship Management
∙Build and maintain strong relationships with seed producers, traders, and wholesalers.
∙Monitor supplier performance, ensuring adherence to quality and delivery standards.
∙Develop alternative supplier networks to mitigate risks related to supply disruptions.
3. Quality Assurance & Compliance
∙Establish and enforce strict quality control measures for seed procurement.
∙Collaborate with internal teams to test and validate seed germination rates.
∙Address any seed-related quality issues with suppliers and negotiate replacements/refunds.
4. Cost Optimization & Budgeting
∙Track procurement costs and identify opportunities to reduce per-unit seed expenses.
∙Work closely with finance teams to manage procurement budgets and cash flow planning.
∙Explore cost-saving initiatives such as bulk purchasing, supplier partnerships, and seasonal price advantages.
5. Logistics & Inventory Management
∙Coordinate with warehouse and operations teams to ensure proper seed storage and inventory management.
∙Optimize transportation and logistics to minimize costs and reduce wastage.
∙Maintain accurate records of seed procurement, usage, and stock levels.
6. Data Analysis & Reporting
∙Maintain detailed procurement reports, including supplier performance metrics and cost analyses
∙Provide insights and recommendations to leadership on procurement trends and strategies.
∙Leverage data to improve forecasting accuracy for seed demand planning.
Key Qualifications:
∙Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agriculture, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
∙5+ years of experience in procurement, preferably in agriculture or agri-tech industries.
∙Strong negotiation skills and ability to build lasting supplier relationships.
∙Knowledge of seed quality parameters, testing methods, and regulatory compliance.
∙Experience with inventory management and logistics coordination.
∙Willingness to travel frequently to supplier locations and GLCs.
Preferred Skills & Attributes:
∙Understanding of seed varieties and existing network of suppliers.
∙Familiarity with government seed certification and procurement regulations.
∙Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
