We recently hosted Dr. Prashant Vikram, Director of Research in Agriculture at SGT University, Gurugram in the latest episode of our Krishi Rishi podcast – where we engage Key Opinion Leaders in insightful conversations. Watch this engaging discussion on impact of Land Shrinkage & Soil degradation on farmers and overall India, with potential solutions to both including Organic Farming.

Dr. Vikram opined that as populations grow, land availability shrinks due to urbanization, infrastructure projects, and agricultural demands. Increased housing and development projects, often required for a burgeoning population, exacerbate this issue. Additionally, soil fertility suffers as farmers rely on monocropping and chemical fertilizers to meet rising food demands.
To combat the challenges of land shrinkage, resource pooling among small farmers is essential. Collaborative farming initiatives can reduce costs and enhance productivity through mechanization and technology. By embracing diverse agricultural practices tailored to local ecosystems, farmers can optimize yields while ensuring sustainability.
However, he called out that the profound effects of decline in agricultural production on farmers’ lives. As productivity stagnates, incomes drop, leading to financial instability. Also due to higher use of chemicals, the farmers themselves face health issues from chemical exposure in the fields. Farmers increasingly face the challenge of balancing crop yields with soil health.
According to Dr. Vikram, innovative solutions like hydroponics can provide nutritious fodder while conserving land. This sustainable method utilizes minimal space and resources, addressing the growing demand for milk and crops without harmful chemicals. Embracing such technologies can enhance profitability and resilience among farming communities.
Government Support for Small Farmers
Dr. Vikram informed our viewers that the government has implemented several policies to assist small farmers. Despite these efforts, challenges remain in implementing effective support systems that genuinely uplift small farmers.
Deciphering Natural Farming, its nuances & whether it is different from Organic Farming
Dr. Vikram then explained the concept of Natural Farming in detail. Its role in tackling issue of Soil Degradation, how is it different from Organic Farming and the concept of SAFE farming. Natural farming refers to a traditional agricultural practice that utilizes 100% natural substances without chemical inputs. It’s distinct from organic farming, which is a systematic approach to farming that ensures no chemicals are used at any stage. It has been practiced in remote areas, focusing on sustainability and soil health. While it has long-term benefits, it may incur initial losses, making it less appealing for widespread adoption. The government is incentivizing these practices, emphasizing the importance of improving soil health, which directly affects human health.
Dr. Vikram feels that while implementing natural farming on a large scale can be challenging, small-scale experiments should be encouraged as they can enhance soil health and sustainability.
We thank Dr. Prashant Vikram for taking out time to discuss some pressing issues that our farmers are facing & providing some avenues of relief for them. We wish him success with his important research related to Quinoa which can help unlock the potential of this Superfood and help our farmers achieve the best value from it.
